Ocean Rig Jewlery Policy

Why do we have policies and procedures, do we think they are worth while or just something which companies devise to save them from being taken to court? Should we follow the policies and procedures or just pay enough attention to keep the Supervisor happy? I know better, I’ve been doing it this way for years...

Let us get off the rig and look at what we do at home. We all wear seat belts whilst driving the car because it is the Law and we will be prosecuted or pay a fine if we don’t. Do we believe the law has saved more lives or is it another reason for the Policeman to stop you and check your car?

Back to Jewelry
Your working in the garage and installing new shelving to the wall, steel framed with good strong sheet metal shelves. The top of the rack has to be screwed to the wall so your standing on a small stool and pushing hard against the screw driver.Something everyone has done but the stool slides and you fall....

As you fall and it’s only 50cm (20 inches) so your not worried but thinking or maybe saying some strange words, you reach out with your other hand and drop down onto the garage floor. You feel a sharp pain on the ring finger.....I make no apologies for these pictures but we do have policies to stop it...

That was sick I hear you say but......
I see no difference with wearing a ring offshore or doing work in your garage at home. The potential is there to have an accident wether closing the car door – I can name some one onboard who can verify this comment or stepping down off the stool.
If your not wearing it then you can not have an accident with it.

So why ignore the safety policies?

Sometimes drastic measures have to be used to get the message across, take this message with you and learn from it.

Share this with others, you might just save someone from having this type of accident. Next week we will talk about the Laundry and finding sharp objects in coveralls........
